Bjelasica Mountain

Magic Mountain of Montenegro

Bjelasica is a mountain range in north-central Montenegro, known for its gentle alpine landscapes, rich natural beauty, and strong tourism potential. The range is part of the Dinaric Alps and is one of the most accessible mountain regions in the country.

The highest peak of Bjelasica is Crna Glava (2,139 m). The massif includes several other peaks above 2,000 metres, including Strmenica, Zekova Glava, Kosara, Troglava, and others.

Bjelasica covers an area of approximately 630 km² and is characterized by soft, rounded mountain forms, which are of volcanic origin. This makes it different from many other Montenegrin mountains, which are mostly limestone-based and shaped by karst formations.

The mountain range is bordered by the Tara and Lim rivers and spans several municipalities, including Kolašin, Mojkovac, Bijelo Polje, Berane, and Andrijevica.

Bjelasica is especially known for its natural attractions, including several glacial lakes such as Biogradsko Lake, Pešića Lake, Šiško Lake, Ursulovačko Lake, and smaller surrounding lakes. The area is protected by its natural richness and forms part of one of the most important ecological zones in Montenegro.

Thanks to its location and accessibility, Bjelasica is one of the main centers of mountain tourism in Montenegro. The town of Kolašin is located at its foothills and serves as the main gateway to the mountain. From Hotel Čile, the Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600 ski centres are only a short drive away, making the area a popular winter destination.

In winter, Bjelasica offers excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions, while in summer it is ideal for hiking, trekking, cycling, and eco-tourism activities. The combination of pristine nature, mountain lakes, and easy access makes it one of the fastest-growing outdoor tourism destinations in Montenegro.
