Morača Monastery
founded in 1252
Manastir Morača is one of the most important medieval Orthodox monasteries in Montenegro, located in the Morača River canyon in the central part of the country, approximately 25 km from Kolašin.
From Hotel Čile in Kolašin, the monastery is located about 25–30 minutes by car, making it an easy half-day excursion for guests staying in the area.
The monastery was founded in 1252. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin and represents one of the most significant cultural, historical, and spiritual monuments in Montenegro.
Built in a dramatic natural setting surrounded by mountains and forest, Morača Monastery is known for its impressive medieval architecture, well-preserved frescoes, and peaceful atmosphere. The complex includes the main church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a smaller church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
Visitors can admire valuable frescoes from the 13th and 16th centuries, considered among the finest examples of medieval Balkan art. The monastery remains active today and continues to serve as an important spiritual center.
Thanks to its location along the main road between Podgorica and northern Montenegro, Morača Monastery is a popular stop for travelers exploring the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
